The Commoners Bar

Where History Meets Hospitality
Since 1849

A Living Monument to Lyttelton's Past

Nestled in the historic basement of the British Hotel, The Commoners Bar stands as a testament to Lyttelton's vibrant maritime heritage. For over 175 years, this site has been a beacon of sociability and conviviality, welcoming sailors, railway workers, and locals alike.

Today, we continue this proud tradition, offering a relaxed atmosphere where history breathes through every brick and beam. Whether you're here for our renowned Nepalese cuisine by Sherpa Kai or to soak in the ambiance of one of Christchurch's most storied venues, you'll find yourself part of a legacy that has survived earthquakes, wars, and the passage of time.

Historic Venue

One of only two of Lyttelton's historic hotels to survive the devastating Canterbury Earthquakes of 2010-2011. The British Hotel has been a social hub since 1874.
